Step 4 establish your core ideologies

What is core ideology and what does it consist of?

We often hear of core ideology as relating only to companies, ministries and other organizations. But it also relates to individuals as every individual should have a core ideology.

In his book ‘Built to last’, Jim Collins noted that individuals and organizations that are built to last or often succeed more are those that have an enduring core ideology that serves as a source of guidance and inspiration.

Every individual should develop a core ideology for their lives.

What is core ideology?

It is the foundation upon which you build your life.

Core ideology consists of two unchanging components: Purpose and Core Values.

It is from these two unchanging elements that you can develop your vision, mission, goals and other evolving strategies.

Your core ideology clearly defines who you are, what you stand for. It is the underlying passion that drives you to be better.

Let’s take a look at the components of the core ideology.

Purpose: answers your ‘WHY’

Your purpose is the ‘WHY’ of your life, your organization, your ministry.  Your purpose is a statement of ‘WHY’ we exist, ‘WHY’ we do what we do, ‘WHY’ we want to make a difference.

It answers questions such as:

‘WHY’ do you exist?

‘WHY’ did you start your business or do you want to start one?

‘WHY’ do you want to make a difference?

‘WHY’ do you want to get married?

Defining our purpose for existence gives us the foundation on which we can define the purpose (reason, intention) for every area of our lives and for things we do daily.

Once you have determined your purpose, you then think of vision, mission, and goals, which are the components of your purpose.

While purpose is the unchanging core ideology, these three can change with time and as progress is made.

Vision: answers your ‘WHAT’

The Vision for your life, business etc is the mental perception of the kind of life/environment you aspire to create or become.

Your vision is and should be something bigger and broader than you, bigger than your present situation, bigger than your current capacity and ability to make it happen. They are usually broad and vague.

Your Vision answers questions such as:

What will I become in the future? ( e.g one of the richest men/women in the world; world entrepreneur of the year, to go from ‘living to winning’ etc.)

What will my business be in the future? (e.g to become a household name,  to create products/services that makes people happy, to help people enjoy life, life is good, etc).

What kind of life do I want to live 30-50 years from now?

What do I want people to remember me for?

Your vision should be inspired by your purpose. In becoming your ‘vision’ you should be fulfilling purpose.

Mission: answers your ‘HOW’

The mission statement for your life, business, blog, ministry etc is a statement of ‘how’ you will accomplish your vision which ultimately helps you fulfill purpose.

It often includes a summary of your core values, strengths and what makes you different.
It explains the scope of your life ( the role you play and impact you make) and business operations. Your mission declares your attitude towards others, life and business; declares your values, your strength and how you differ from others and gives people an orientation about you, your vision, what you do, how you do it, why you do it and how it benefits them. It pulls your purpose, vision, and values together.

Your Mission statement answers questions such as:

How do I fulfill my purpose?

How do I build my vision to make it a reality?

How do I make a difference?

What makes me different and how do I use it to fulfill my purpose?

Goals are the small steps and action you take to reach your vision and purpose.

Your goal describes clearly the activities and task to be completed daily, weekly, monthly or yearly which provides the basics for you to measure or track your performance and progress towards your vision and ultimately your purpose.

While your vision can be broad and vague and unrealistic, Goals provides clarity to your vision, should be specific. measurable, realistic and time-based.

Goals involve breaking down your vision into actionable and measurable targets or activities to be achieved in the next 30, 20, 10, 5 years and 1 year.

Core Values: This is the second component of the core ideology.

They are a set of principles or beliefs that an individual or organization views as of central importance.

They guide your conducts and your relationship with others.

Your core values define what you believe and how you want others to see you.

Core values are your guiding principles. They are things or qualities you will never compromise for money, love or anything else that defies your beliefs.

They form the foundation upon which you build your life, business, relationships and everything else. They help you place emphasis on what you deem important and worthy.

Core values like purpose are unchanging. You don’t change your values because of trends, circumstances or whatsoever.

Every individual and organization (no matter how small) should have a core ideology. It is your success framework and the starting point of intentional living and creating the life you want

I will write more about these components much later and work you through how you can define your purpose, determine your core values, vision, mission and set goals (if you don’t have any) for your life.
